The original intent of HB-1195 was to increase the criminal penalty for solicitation to commit, criminal attempt, and conspiracy to commit human trafficking. Unfortunately, that ran into some political posturing but we’re able to reach a bi-partisan compromise to amend the bill. The revised version creates a study to report on all instances of human trafficking in Colorado as well as evaluate the effect our laws have had. Will then use the evidence gathered from the study to help us determine what legislative actions maybe necessary to best combat human trafficking in our state.
Every sixty seconds a victim is trafficked in the world and every 10 minutes a woman or a child is trafficked in the United States. In Colorado alone, there are over 30 pending cases involving the trafficking of children and adults. Unfortunately, this issue will require continued vigilance as I-25 and I-70 are major transportation corridors for human trafficking.
“In a globalized world, Human trafficking is an epidemic which unfortunately only continues to grow. This form of modern day slavery preys on and exploits the most vulnerable in our society. It’s my intent to make Colorado a leader on this issue and ensure we have the harshest penalties for criminals who participate in this shameful practice. I’m pleased we’re moving forward on this issue but there’s still much more work to be done.” –Rep. Dan Nordberg, Colorado Springs
